Two erasers, and when to use which
On-device eraser (free, private). It rebuilds the marked area by copying small patches from the rest of your photo, the way Photoshop’s Content-Aware Fill works. It is excellent on skies, walls, grass, sand, water, fabric and other repeating texture, and it runs entirely in your browser.
AI fill (limited per hour). A generative inpainting model redraws the marked area from scratch, so it can continue a straight edge, a face or a hand that no patch in the photo could supply. Only a crop around your mark is sent, the result is pasted back inside your brush strokes only, and nothing is stored.
Tips for a clean result
- Paint a little beyond the watermark edge. Semi-transparent marks leave a faint halo if you trace them too tightly.
- Erase big marks in two or three passes, one section at a time, instead of all at once.
- Tiled watermarks that cover the whole image are the hardest case: there is no clean texture left to borrow. Work region by region and use AI fill on detailed parts.
- Download as PNG for graphics and screenshots, JPEG for photos.
Use it on images you have the right to edit
Watermarks exist to protect someone’s work. CleanMarks is built for your own photos: an old logo on your product shots, a date stamp from a film camera, a preview mark on an image you have since licensed, a stranger in your holiday picture. Removing a watermark from someone else’s photo to reuse it can break copyright law (in the US, 17 U.S.C. § 1202 covers removing copyright management information). If you need a stock photo, license it; the clean file comes with the licence.

Is this watermark remover really free with no sign-up?
Yes. The on-device eraser has no account, no watermark of its own on the result and no daily limit, because it runs on your own device. AI fill costs us money per image, so it is limited to a few uses per hour per visitor.
Are my photos uploaded?
Not for the on-device eraser: the image is processed in your browser and never sent anywhere. When you press AI fill or Find marks, a crop of the image is sent to the AI model for that one request and not stored by CleanMarks.
Does it reduce the resolution?
Photos up to 4096 pixels on the long side are edited at full size. Larger images are scaled down to 4096 px so phones do not run out of memory.
Can it remove a watermark that covers the whole photo?
Partly. A mark spread across the entire image leaves little clean texture to rebuild from. Erase it in sections and use AI fill for faces and edges. Results vary with how opaque the mark is.
Is removing a watermark legal?
Editing your own images is fine. Removing a watermark from someone else’s work to reuse it can infringe copyright. Use CleanMarks on photos you own or have licensed.
Can AI remove watermarks?
Yes. Here, an AI vision model finds the watermark and boxes it, and a generative inpainting model (FLUX.1 Fill) can redraw the area under it. For most marks over background, the free on-device eraser is just as clean and needs no AI at all.
How do I remove a watermark without leaving a blur?
Blur appears when a tool averages the surrounding colours. The on-device eraser copies real texture from your photo instead, and AI fill redraws detail. Paint slightly past the mark’s edge so no faint outline is left behind.
Can I remove watermarks from many images at once?
