How to remove a watermark from a Word document

  1. 1Drop your .docx file, or press “Try a sample”.
  2. 2Check the report: text and picture watermarks found and removed.
  3. 3Download the cleaned .docx and open it in Word, Google Docs or Pages.

The quick way inside Word

If you have Word, its own command is the fastest: on Windows go to Design → Watermark → Remove Watermark; on a Mac it is Design → Watermark → No watermark. Microsoft documents both in its Word support pages. If that menu does nothing, the watermark is in a different section’s header: double-click the header in each section and repeat, or use the tool above, which cleans every header at once.

Where Word keeps a watermark

A Word watermark is not part of the page text. It is a shape anchored in the header (a WordArt text shape for DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL, or a washed-out picture), placed behind the text. Inside the .docx file it lives in word/header*.xml with a name Word gives every watermark. The tool finds those shapes and deletes them, so nothing is covered up and nothing else moves.

Watermarks it can’t catch

  • A picture pasted on the page rather than inserted as a watermark: click it in Word and press Delete.
  • Old .doc files: save as .docx first.
  • A document converted from a scanned PDF: the mark is baked into a page image. Use the photo watermark remover on that image.

Your own content

Use these tools on files you made or have the right to edit. A watermark often identifies the creator or tells viewers that something was made with AI. Removing it from someone else’s work, or to pass AI content off as real, can break copyright law and platform rules.

Questions

How do I remove a watermark from a Word document?

In Word, go to Design → Watermark → Remove Watermark. Without Word, drop the .docx into the tool on this page: it deletes the watermark from every header and gives you the cleaned file.

Why can’t I remove the watermark in Word?

Usually because the document has several sections, each with its own header, or the watermark was added as a header shape by another program. The tool here removes watermark shapes from all headers at once.

Does it work with Google Docs files?

Download the file as Microsoft Word (.docx) from Google Docs, clean it here, then upload it again.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The .docx is unzipped and rewritten by your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
